I knew he was a film buff, but I realized his mind and skills are far more cinematic than I ever knew. I first met him when he did post production lighting and render magic on our environments while we were working on \u2018Friends and Heroes\u2019 for \u2018The Charactershop\u2019 at Pebble Mill in Brum in the early \u2018Noughties\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Graduating from\nBournemouth University back in 1998 with a BA(hons) in Media Production and an\nMA\/PGDip in Computer Animation, he was very lucky to get \u201ctalent scouted\u201d by\nthe BBC and spent 5 years there as a computer animator and VFX artist. After\nthat he worked in computer games, architectural visualisation, children\u2019s\ntelevision and commercials \u2013 primarily working freelance in London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cIn my\nspare time I\u2019d always enjoyed digital painting, or creating personal CGI\nprojects \u2013 normally non-narrative and more focussed on mood. I now teach VFX,\nconcept art and digital painting at Staffordshire University, which allows me\ntime to do more painting whilst exploring different techniques and using that\nas research to teach my students. He sees himself\nas a bit impatient and lazy, doesn\u2019t like people being mean and lashing out at\neach other or treating each other as expendable assets. He\u2019s not keen on blokes\nbeing chauvinists and passing it off as \u201cJust a laugh!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When it\ncomes to digital painting and concept art, He likes Eytan Zana \u2013 mostly for his\ntechnique. \u201cIt hits that sweet spot between a painterly style that is also\ncinematic and crisply graphical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He\u2019s also a total fanboy for Swedish author and\nillustrator Simon Stalenhag, who digitally paints scenes of Swedish and\nAmerican suburbia that have been corrupted by weird science fiction elements. I\ncan totally see this is Ants work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As far as mediums go Anthony is a digital artist; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI use Photoshop to paint, sometimes mimicking and working as an oil painter would, underpainting the canvas, applying glazes, etc.\u201d he says. \u201cBut due to my CGI and VFX background I sometimes also like to incorporate 3D models that I\u2019ve built.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has dabbled in acrylic, gouache and oils but sees\nhimself very much a beginner in those mediums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"532\" src=\"https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o-1024x532.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-98\" srcset=\"https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o-1024x532.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o-768x399.jpg 768w, https:\/\/samsara-gs.co.uk\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/48355247_10157307578338690_6202768056368758784_o.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><br> &#8220;There are a tonne of things wrong with this but I did like the wet road and the overall attempt at telling some kind of story. &#8220;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; I ask him about the source of the ideas and topics shown in his works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot so much current affairs. I am fascinated by the Cold War, specifically how it played out in Europe and it\u2019s my aim to produce an ongoing series of paintings depicting real and fictitious characters who operated during that time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; \u201cCreating paintings and images pretty much stops me from going mad. I\u2019ve suffered from anxiety and depression for as long as I can remember. When I\u2019m making a painting I can lose myself in it and only worry about it rather than everything else. I also love realistic yet ambiguous art, no matter what the medium; it can be a film, book, music, photography or painting \u2013 it doesn\u2019t matter to me. If it looks real but is also dreamlike then I\u2019m predisposed to love it. Probably why I like David Lynch movies and television so much. For me, art is less interesting when it\u2019s trying to make you think something and more interesting if its goal is to make you <em>feel. <\/em>Subject, composition, light, texture \u2013 these are all tactile things to me.
