The school's team has been running Global Citizenship training for teachers for a number of years now. We offer a training programme which teachers can book onto or schools can invite us in to deliver an In-Service training day for all school staff.

We believe whole school training has a bigger impact on developing Global Citizenship across the curriculum and school ethos.

Global Teacher Award : Please get in touch if interested in this training.
The Global Teacher Award is a national award scheme endorsed by Oxfam and Think Global. Practical engaging activities will explore teaching on local and global societies in a way which challenges stereotypes and
presents a balanced view. Participants will be introduced to exciting resources available from the centre, exploring opportunities
for a truly diverse curriculum. Support with planning and time for discussing challenging issues, giving confidence to teachers to incorporate Global Citizenship into the primary classroom.


International School Partnerships
For schools who are looking to set up an International School Partnership or reinvigorate an existing partnership. A practical day, exploring the great benefits but also the challenges of setting up school partnerships internationally. Feedback from School Partnerships training:

Developing Critical Global Thinking

This training is built around an exciting resource which has been developed in conjunction with West Sussex teachers and Healthy Schools Team and trialled with primary schools in the county. It aims to stimulate critical thinking skills about local and global issues whilst linking in with commonly taught Primary Topics, such as The Victorians, Ancient Civilisations and Houses and Homes.

 

Philosophy for Children (P4C) SAPERE Level 1 Accredited 2 Day Training Course

Aims of the course:
This two day course is designed to equip educators with the skills and confidence to develop students' thinking skills, explore challenging subject matter and further their understanding of global citizenship through philosophical enquiry.

Expected outcomes of the course:
Teachers will have an increased awareness and understanding of P4C and how it relates to some of the key concepts in global development such as poverty, inequality, globalization, conflict, power and environment. Teachers will have considered how P4C develops the skills and values / dispositions needed for global learning and be able to use P4C as an approach to exploring complex and often controversial global issues with their pupils, enabling them to make up their own minds about what to think and do.

Embedding global learning in your teaching:
P4C is a powerful methodology for developing pupils' thinking skills and exploring challenging subject matter. This course will enable teachers to identify where global learning links to their curriculum and how to deepen understanding of global issues using an approach that supports the moral development, enquiry and discussion skills of pupils.

Course aimed at: KS2 and KS3

Curriculum subjects explored in this course: English, Science, Geography, History, RS, Citizenship, PSHE

Trainer details:
Dr Flick Dunkley is a registered SAPERE Trainer, has been a trainer in global learning since January 2005 and has delivered more than 20 P4C courses. She has also delivered many other global learning courses including the Global Teachers Award

Other information:
The course includes Sapere accreditation* and handbook. Lunch and refreshments provided. *To achieve level 1 accreditation, participants need to facilitate one enquiry with a class of children and give a brief account of what they did and how they felt it went. They will be sent a form to fill in by Sapere after the course. Please note that this is a 2 day course that will run on the 22nd & 23rd January 2015.

New teachers toolkit and training : Developing Critical Global Thinking

This exciting resource has been developed in conjunction with West Sussex teachers and Healthy Schools Team and trialled with primary schools in the county.

We are excited to offer the opportunity to take part in an in depth, three day training course which has been successfully delivered across the South East of England, focusing on developing critical thinking skills.

The course will encourage participants to:

  • recognise Global Citizenship as a whole school ethos, with links to all curriculum areas
  • understand and address issues embodied in current agendas such as Prevent and Every Child Matters
  • address challenging issues, such as racism and homophobia, in the school community with confidence
  • increase pupils’ knowledge, critical thinking skills, motivation and self-esteem
  • weave identity, globalisation and justice into the curriculum through a questioning approach
  • become a catalyst for change.

All participants receive a free copy of this comprehensive toolkit.

Training in Global Citizenship is available for external practitioners working in schools. These courses are suitable for those involved in sports education and artists working in schools.
